Classroom CITB Courses: All You Need to Know

Our range of training courses is pretty vast, and that’s particularly true of our Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) courses. These courses revolve around health and safety, with a focus on the construction industry. They can be delivered remotely over Zoom, but we also offer classroom CITB courses. Whether you’ll be able to attend these courses in person simply depends on where you’re located, so check out our CITB Courses page to view locations and dates. 

If you’re looking to attend a CITB course in person this year, then we’ll be giving you the lowdown in today’s blog. 

Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS)

The Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) is suited to site managers, or those in similar roles who are responsible for organising, planning, controlling, monitoring, and administering staff. It covers all relevant legislation pertaining to safe working practices in construction and civil engineering. 

If you take the course in a classroom, it will be delivered on five consecutive days throughout the working week. Taught by a CITB approved tutor, the course will also provide you with all relevant resources. The exam will take place at the same venue.

SMSTS Refresher (Classroom CITB Courses)

Your SMSTS certification will last five years, at which point you’ll need to take the Site Management Safety Training Scheme Refresher (SMSTS-R) while your certification is still valid. 

The Refresher course takes two days, and its structure is much the same as the initial SMSTS course. There will be an exam at the venue in which you took the class.

Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS)

The Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS), also known as the Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme, is suited to those with supervisory responsibilities, or anyone who’s eager to move into such a role. All fundamentals of site supervision will be covered, including all relevant laws. 

This classroom CITB course takes two days, and is delivered during the working week by a CITB approved tutor. Just like with the SMSTS, the exam will take place at the venue. 

SSSTS Refresher (CLassroom CITB Courses)

Your SSSTS certification will last five years, at which point you’ll need to take the Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme Refresher while your initial certification is still in date. The course takes place over one day. 

Temporary Works and Health & Safety Awareness

As well as the SMSTS and the SSSTS, two other classroom CITB courses we offer are the Temporary Works course and the Health & Safety Awareness (HSA) course.

There are two types of Temporary Works courses: Supervisor and Coordinator. You can take the Coordinator course, which is more suited to Senior Management, at one of our venues. It takes two days. 

The Health & Safety Awareness course provides an understanding of health and safety laws, and is one of the requirements for a CSCS Green Labourer’s Card. It’s delivered over one day. 

We also offer the Site Environmental Awareness Training Scheme, but this course is only available online. It’s suited to supervisors or managers who need an overview of environmental issues on construction sites.
