Do I Need CSCS if I Have SMSTS?

Yes, you still need a CSCS Card even if you have a Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) certificate.

While both are relevant to working safely and competently in the construction industry, they serve different purposes. SMSTS is a safety management training course, while the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) provides cards that demonstrate an individual’s qualifications, training, and occupational competence.

Having a Site Management certificate doesn’t replace the need for the appropriate CSCS Card.

What Does a CSCS Card Demonstrate?

A CSCS Card provides evidence that a construction worker has the qualifications or training required for their particular role. Different cards are available depending on an individual’s occupation, qualifications, experience, and level of responsibility.

For site managers, supervisors, and other construction professionals, holding the appropriate card can demonstrate that they have the relevant occupational qualifications for their position. Why SMSTS Does Not Replace a CSCS Card

The Site Management training focuses specifically on health and safety management. It’s designed to help site managers understand their legal responsibilities and manage construction activities safely and effectively.

A CSCS Card, on the other hand, provides evidence of your occupational qualifications or competence. Completing the Site Management course does not automatically provide you with a CSCS Card- nor does it replace the qualifications required to obtain the appropriate card.

The two credentials definitely complement one another, but they are not interchangeable.
