CMI Courses: Each Level Explained

CMI Courses are professional qualifications designed to develop knowledge and skills in management and leadership. At CST Training, we offer courses from Levels 3 to 7, providing options for people at different stages of their management careers.

Each level is aimed at a different degree of responsibility and experience. Choosing the right qualification depends on your current role and career goals, and progressing through the levels can help learners develop their capabilities as they take on increasingly senior responsibilities.

What Are the Different CMI Levels?

The qualifications are structured across different levels, with higher levels generally corresponding to more advanced management and leadership responsibilities.

At CST Training, the available options range from Level 3 through to Level 7. Broadly, these levels can be understood as:

  • Level 3 – aimed at aspiring or practising first-line managers
  • Level 4 – suitable for practising managers developing their management capabilities
  • Level 5 – aimed at middle managers and professionals with broader responsibilities
  • Level 6 – focused on management and leadership at a more senior level
  • Level 7 – designed for senior managers and strategic leaders

The exact content will depend on the specific qualification or course, but the progression provides a pathway for developing management expertise.

CMI Courses: Level 3 and Level 4

Level 3 qualifications are generally suitable for people who are beginning their management career or have first-line management responsibilities. They can help learners develop fundamental skills in areas like managing teams, communication, leadership and workplace performance.

Level 4 is a step up. It focuses on practising managers who want to strengthen their existing capabilities. The content can cover areas like managing people, developing teams, operational management and improving organisational performance.

Level 5: Developing Middle Management Skills

Level 5 is generally associated with middle management and more experienced professionals. At this level, learners can develop a deeper understanding of management and leadership, and how these principles can be applied within an organisation.

Topics can include managing organisational performance, leadership, coaching and mentoring, strategic thinking and managing people.

Level 5 can be particularly relevant for managers who have moved beyond first-line responsibilities and are becoming responsible for larger teams, departments or more complex organisational objectives.

CMI Courses: Level 6 and Level 7

Level 6 is aimed at more experienced managers and leaders who have significant responsibility within an organisation. It focuses on developing advanced management and leadership capabilities, and can help learners consider how their decisions influence organisational performance.

Level 7 is the highest level offered by CST Training and is designed for senior managers, directors and strategic leaders. At this level, the focus moves further towards strategic management, organisational leadership and long-term business performance.

Rather than concentrating solely on day-to-day management, Level 7 encourages learners to consider the wider strategic challenges facing organisations, and how senior leaders can respond to them.
