Do I Need a CSCS Card If I Have SSSTS?
The Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) is a CITB-accredited course aimed at those in, or about to enter, supervisory roles on construction sites. It teaches key principles of health and safety, environmental awareness, and legal responsibilities. It’s an ideal course for those responsible for monitoring teams and enforcing safety standards on-site. But do you need a CSCS card if you already have SSSTS?
In today’s blog, we’ll be breaking down how the Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme works, before covering how it relates to CSCS.
Why SSSTS is an Important Course
Health and safety are fundamental in construction. SSSTS helps supervisors understand and implement the best practices to reduce site hazards, improve communication, and promote a safety-first culture. Employers value certified staff because it shows they have a proactive approach to site safety and leadership.
Structure of the Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme
The course lasts two days and covers:
- Health and safety legislation
- Supervisory responsibilities
- Risk assessments and method statements
- Site inductions, toolbox talks, and method statement briefings
It ends with a multiple-choice assessment, and successful candidates receive a CITB certificate that is valid for five years.
Can You Run a Site with the Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme?
While the Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme is a valuable qualification, it doesn’t grant the authority to run an entire construction site. That responsibility usually falls to site or project managers, who are more suited to qualifications like SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme). However, the Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme does equip supervisors with the knowledge to manage teams safely under a manager’s direction.
CSCS Cards vs SSSTS
CSCS cards are not training courses, but physical cards that prove you have the necessary qualifications and training to work in specific roles on site. They are colour-coded based on job roles, and experience levels. For example, a supervisor will typically need a Gold Supervisory CSCS card.
A CSCS card is a key requirement in the UK construction industry, proving workers have the necessary training and qualifications. Even with an SSSTS certification, a valid CSCS card is still needed to work on-site.
