What Color CSCS Card is SSSTS?

Many people assume that completing the SSSTS course leads to a specific CSCS card, but that’s not actually the case. The Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) is a health and safety training course for supervisors, while CSCS cards are linked to occupational qualifications and job roles. Completing the Supervision training does not directly qualify someone for a CSCS card, and there is no official card colour associated with the course.

Understanding the Purpose of CSCS Cards

CSCS cards are designed to demonstrate that workers have the appropriate training and qualifications for their role within the construction industry. Different card colours represent different occupations, skill levels, and qualifications.

For example, skilled workers might hold a Blue CSCS Card, while supervisors often apply for the Gold Supervisor Card if they meet the qualification requirements. Managers might hold the Black Manager Card. The card you can apply for depends on your NVQ or equivalent qualification, rather than just attending a training course.

Why SSSTS Does Not Lead to a Specific CSCS Card

The course focuses on health and safety responsibilities for supervisors working on construction sites. While it’s highly respected within the industry, it’s not itself an occupational qualification.

This means the Supervision course alone does not make you eligible for a CSCS card. To apply for a supervisor-level card, such as the Gold Supervisor Card, you would usually need a relevant Level 3 NVQ or equivalent qualification, in addition to passing the appropriate CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test.

How the Training Supports Supervisory Roles

Although the course does not correspond to a particular CSCS card colour, it’s still enormously valuable for those moving into supervisory positions. Many employers expect supervisors to complete the course because it improves awareness of legal responsibilities, site safety procedures, and communication on-site.
