From residential homes to large-scale commercial projects, there are many opportunities in the sector for those with the right qualifications and skills. This blog will discuss some of the most popular construction jobs in the UK, what qualifications are needed to secure them and a general overview of each role.
1) Bricklayer – Bricklayers are responsible for laying bricks and other building materials like stone, concrete blocks and tiles when constructing walls and buildings. To become a successful bricklayer you need to complete an NVQ Level 2 in Bricklaying or similar course which demonstrates your expertise. This NVQ can be completed with CST Training, learn more here. 2) Construction Manager – Construction managers are responsible for overseeing and coordinating building projects from beginning to end. To become a construction manager you need to have considerable on-site experience before applying for jobs. Level 6/7 construction management NVQ qualifications will also be required by employers. 3) Land & Site Surveyors – Land & Site surveyors measure the shape of the land, and gather data for civil engineering and construction projects. In addition to academic qualifications, many employers prefer candidates who have obtained professional membership of organisations such as the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).
4) Architect – Architects design buildings that improve our environment and contribute to its cultural landscape. In order to become an architect in the UK, you need to have completed a recognised course at university or polytechnic school accredited by RIBA (the Royal Institute of British Architects). After obtaining a qualification, you must also obtain practical experience and be registered with the Architects Registration Board (ARB) and the ARB Practice Examination.
5) Electrician – Electricians install and maintain electrical wiring systems in buildings such as houses, factories and offices. To become a qualified electrician in the UK, you need to have completed a Level 3 Diploma in Electrotechnical Services or its equivalent. This course is available at various institutes and colleges across the country. After obtaining your qualification, you will need to register with NAPIT (the National Association of Professional Inspectors & Testers) or another Approved Body before looking for work.
6) Plumber – Plumbers install and maintain plumbing systems in buildings like homes and offices, ensuring they conform to health and safety requirements. In order to become a qualified plumber you will need to complete a Level 2 Diploma in Plumbing Studies at an accredited college or institute and obtain practical experience. After obtaining your qualification, you will need to register with Gas Safe and join a professional trade organisation such as the Chartered Institute of Plumbing & Heating Engineering (CIPHE).
