What is Legionella? 

Legionella are bacteria found commonly in water where the temperature is between 20-45°C, and nutrients are available. In water below 20°C, the bacteria are dormant, and in water above 60°C the bacteria does not survive. 

Legionnaires’ disease is a type of pneumonia, and can be potentially fatal. The disease is contracted by the inhalation of airborne water droplets that contain the Legionella bacteria. These droplets tend to be most common in steamy washrooms. It’s worth noting that Legionnaires’ disease cannot be spread from person to person. 

The people most at risk of Legionnaires’ disease are the elderly, alcoholics, and smokers. Those with conditions such as diabetes, cancer, or respiratory disease/kidney disease are also more likely to contract the disease.

Basic Legionella Management: Controlling the Bacteria 

If you’re in charge of a building’s health and safety, it’s crucial to control the water supply and system. This is the only way to ensure that Legionella won’t multiply.

Before anything else, you must risk assess the building’s water system. If there are any issues, or warning signs of potential issues, then a thorough risk assessment will make these known. If you do become aware of issues, then your next step would be creating a management plan. 

Legionella management is also vital when it comes to the food industry. Those responsible for the health and safety of a kitchen must ensure that the water systems avoid contamination. 

Diagnostic Factors of Legionnaires’ Disease

There are a number of diagnostic factors when it comes to Legionnaires’ disease. Naturally these would be of greater concern if the person experiencing the symptoms was at greater risk of the disease.

The main diagnostic factors are a fever and a headache. There are other diagnostic factors, although these tend to be less common. Those include a productive cough, nausea or vomiting, and abdominal pain.

Another symptom of Legionnaires’ disease is dyspnoea, which is most commonly referred to as a shortness of breath. If you’re suffering from dyspnoea, it’ll feel like you can’t get enough air to your lungs. You may also experience tightness in your chest.
