Is SSSTS a NVQ Level 3?
If you’re working in construction and looking to upskill or take on more responsibility, you’ve probably come across both SSSTS and NVQ Level 3 qualifications. But are they the same thing? In today’s blog, we’ll be explaining why this is not, in fact, the case, and breaking down the differences between these very distinct qualifications.
Is SSSTS a NVQ Level 3?
No, SSSTS is not a NVQ Level 3 qualification. SSSTS stands for Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme. It’s a short training course accredited by the CITB (Construction Industry Training Board), aimed at construction supervisors, or those about to become supervisors. While it’s an extremely valuable course for health and safety knowledge, it’s not a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ), and it doesn’t sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) at Level 3.
What are NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications)?
NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications) are work-based qualifications that assess your real-world skills and competence in your job role. Unlike the Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme, which is completed in just two days, an NVQ Level 3 takes longer, and involves building a portfolio of evidence, workplace assessments, and demonstrating consistent on-the-job performance. For example, an NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Work Supervision is ideal for those looking to prove their supervisory competence, and often leads to a Gold CSCS card. This is not the case for the Safety Training Scheme.
How Many Years Does the Certification Last?
The SSSTS certificate is valid for five years. To keep it active, you must complete the Refresher course before it expires. If your certificate lapses, you’ll need to take the full two-day course again to regain certification.
Conclusion: Is SSSTS a NVQ Level 3?
SSSTS is a short, CITB-accredited training course, not an NVQ Level 3. It’s useful for supervisors, but NVQs are longer, competency-based qualifications that demonstrate your ongoing ability in a specific role.
