Do I Need CSCS If I Have SSSTS?

In the UK construction industry, workers sometimes confuse the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) with training courses like the Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS). While both are important, they serve very different purposes. CSCS is a certification scheme that provides cards proving a worker’s competence and qualifications, granting access to construction sites. The Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme, on the other hand, is a training course designed for supervisors to understand health and safety responsibilities. They are essentially unrelated; holding the Supervisor certification doesn’t give you a CSCS card.

Understanding the Role of CSCS

The CSCS card system is designed to ensure that everyone working on construction sites has the appropriate training and qualifications for their role. For operatives, supervisors, and managers, the card acts as proof of competence and is often required by employers before granting site access. The type of card you hold depends on your qualifications, ranging from the Green Labourer Card, to the Black Manager Card. Without a valid card, many workers will find themselves unable to work on regulated sites, regardless of other training they may have completed.

How SSSTS Works

The course is specifically aimed at site supervisors. It provides essential knowledge on health and safety legislation, risk assessments, and how to manage teams safely. Completing the Supervisor training demonstrates that you understand supervisory responsibilities, but it doesn’t replace the need for a CSCS card. In fact, many supervisors are expected to hold both: the Supervisor qualification to prove they have the training, and the appropriate CSCS card to prove competence, and gain site access. By 2026, employers increasingly expect supervisors to combine these qualifications, ensuring both compliance, and effective leadership.

Combining CSCS and SSSTS for Career Progression

For those aiming to progress in construction, holding both is ideal. The CSCS card provides the legal and practical gateway to site work, while SSSTS equips you with the skills to manage safety and people effectively.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I Need CSCS If I Have SSSTS?

Yes. CSCS and SSSTS are separate. The Supervisor certification proves you’ve completed supervisor training, but you still need the appropriate CSCS card to access sites, and to move into certain roles.
