Construction Site Safety Essentials: A Guide

When you’re looking to develop your career in construction, whether via health and safety awareness or by building one specific set of skills, the industry can feel quite overwhelming. You’ll find yourself asking a myriad of questions: what is a CSCS Green Card, and how do I acquire one? How do E-learning courses work? And what would be covered in a CITB health and safety course? In today’s blog, we’ll be answering all of these questions and more, as we break down the essentials of construction site safety.

Construction Site Safety: Getting Your CSCS Green Card

Before getting anywhere in your construction career, you’re going to need a CSCS Green Card. CSCS stands for Construction Skills Certification Scheme, and in the UK, a Green Card is an entry credential for any kind of construction job. There are a number of different types of CSCS cards, but the Green card is the first.

If you need a Green CSCS card, your quickest and most reliable option is the Online CSCS Labourer’s Course right here on CST Training

E-learning Courses with CST Training

It’s a lot easier to further your career in construction than it used to be. This is largely because a lot of the work can be done entirely online. When you complete a remote NVQ with CST Training, for example, you’ll be submitting your work through our intuitive online portal. The ability to complete a course through your current job also means you won’t have to take any time off from that job. You’ll be developing your career without having to pause it.

CITB Construction Site Safety Courses

When it comes to construction site safety, CITB (Construction Industry Training Board) courses are designed to boost awareness of health and safety to the industry standard. At CST Training, we offer five courses that focus on construction site safety. These include the Site Management Safety Training Scheme, the Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme, Temporary Works, and Health & Safety Awareness.

The content of each of these courses will differ, but they all have a focus on the responsibilities involved in regards to keeping a construction site, and the people on that site, as safe as possible.

Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS)

The SMSTS will provide you with all you need to know when it comes to meeting regulatory health and safety standards. This scheme is most suited to those who track, prepare, manage, or are in some way in charge of groups of workers.

Site Supervisors Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS)

This is a qualification that tends to be expected of managers, and is aimed at site supervisors or those looking to become supervisors. It covers just about every aspect of construction site safety.

Temporary Works Supervisor and Coordinator

The Temporary Works Supervisor course is aimed at those who are, or have been, responsible for temporary works- meaning any kind of construction that is temporary, like scaffolding. The Coordinator course, on the other hand, lasts two days, and is designed specifically for those already in Senior Management.

Health and Safety Awareness (HSA)

The HSA course will provide you with an understanding of any relevant health and safety laws. The three main areas covered include risk assessment, hazard identification, and method statements.
